Vegan pizza experiments

On Friday I drove past the fish and chip shop.  It was wet and cold.  I wanted hot chips.  When I turned the corner into my street, I saw a pizza delivery man.  Pizza!  That would do.

We didn't call out for pizza.  It takes too long.  I made fast track pizza dough.  In keeping with Vegan MoFo there was no cheese.  I mushed up a small (170g) tin of baked beans with 2 tbsp tomato paste for the pizza sauce.  On top was mushroom, capsicum, spring onion and a seasoned tofu.  More about the tofu later.

Great pizza.  Plenty of flavour.  E said it needed more sauce.  Something  to glue the topping to the pizza.  Our topping scattered over the plate at first bite.  Maybe I needed a cheeze sauce like Sarah's.  More experimentation needed.

  3. I'm a big fan of baked beans, too, so I'm quite pleased with the idea of using them on a pizza - vegan or otherwise!

  4. Thanks for sharing Johanna. I'm always looking for new ways to get legumes into the diet. This reads and looks killer delicious. :)

  5. I'm definitely putting beans in my sauce next (maybe even on top of my bean-based crust!). Love it--great idea!

  6. Great idea to use beans on pizza - I would have thought they would have held the topping together - hmmm, interesting. Will have to try this. We had quick pizza tonight - CT made it so I'm not quite sure what he did, but it was on our home made bread and had mushrooms that we found growing on by the cliffs on Saturday - very tasty.

  9. I am loving these posts :) We have home made pizza fortnightly and I have my half without cheese (which I preferred even before I decided to reduce dairy) but I've never thought of using baked beans for a sauce. The best thing is that Mr Bite loves them in their own right, so I might even be able to try them for both of us. Thanks!

Also, I had a chuckle at the bear in the measuring cup (or is it a little saucepan?) :D

  10. I also get the urge for pizza whenever I see or smell it. And like you I don't tend to order it, I'd rather eat it in the restaurant or make it at home. This sounds great! :)

  11. Thanks astra - I add beans because sylvia doesn't eat lots of topping

Thanks Joanne - lots of great topping is better than lots of cheese!

Thanks Amanda - I love baked beans too (actually there was a commercial baked beans pizza in the UK a while ago)

Thanks Chucky - there are many places to add some legumes but isn't it wonderful that pizza is one of them!

Thanks Ricki - beans on top of a bean crust - now that is a bean lovers pizza

Thanks Choclette - maybe I didn't have enough sauce - nor enough wild foraged mushrooms - they sound like a great topping

Thanks Lisa - it is a great quick way to make pizza sauce

Thanks Cakelaw - love beans for lunch - is there anywhere they aren't wonderful!

Thanks Kari - hope you like beans on pizza - and yes it is a measuring cup with the bear in it - that is dolly's teddy but I don't know why Sylvia wanted him to sit in the cup - maybe he was just the right size

Thanks Lorraine - we have ordered a lot less pizza since I have discovered how to make pizza dough without waiting for ages for the dough to rise - which is just as well because sometimes it is just all I want
