Savoury sandwich ideas

Lord Sandwich's idea was brilliant.  Smoosh your meal between two slabs of bread so you could get on with life while you eat.  Like salad, sandwiches can be brilliant and satisfying or boring and insipid.  Here are some ideas to inspire me and others.

I love a good hearty sandwich.  If only caterers and cafes would learn that just because you are veg*n doesn't mean you want a limp lettuce leaf and some flavourless tomato in your sandwich. Protein, vegies and an interesting sauce or spread make a huge difference.  The sandwiches here are made with traditional slabs of bread, preferably a good dense sourdough.

My favourite salad sandwich
My basic salad sandwiches:
This is a salad sandwich I have been making since I lived in share houses.  I learned to make it in a sandwich bar job and when volunteering for a food co-op.  I have always enjoyed making multiple sandwiches for whoever is about.  Once warm weather hits in spring I crave this sort of sandwich.

Some interesting sandwiches I have made:
I love new ideas in a sandwich.  It is a great way to give new life to leftovers.  Nut roasts, burgers, vegetarian sausages, dips, pates, cheese all give a sandwich a substance that pairs well with salad, avocado, chutney, pesto, and other vegies.

Other simple sandwich ideas:
Many of these sandwiches are ones I have been eating since I was a child.  These aren't fancy but I will make them when I want something quick and easy.  I was never a PB&J sandwich - it isn't an Australian tradition.  I am not much of a sweet sandwich person.
  • Peanut butter (one of my favourite and easiest sandwiches)
  • Vegemite and cheese
  • Vegemite and walnuts (crush walnuts with the back of a fork)
  • Baked beans
  • Peanut butter, avocado and tomato
  • Apple and sultanas
  • Sweet potato, cheese and chutney
  • Sliced cold veggie sausage, cheese and chutney

    1. Thanks Ms Ihua - liquid smoke is amazing - if only it was easier to find in Melbourne :-(

  2. I've never been a sweet sandwich person either, and I still think nutella on bread is gross. Spoon only. Well, maybe that makes me not a sandwich person... ;)

    1. Thanks Hannah - funny you mention nutella - I love it off a spoon but almost mentioned it as one of the few sweet sandwiches I liked because I will eat it occasionally in a fresh white bread sandwich (fresh white bread is better for sweet stuff like banana and sugar or honey and butter) but then I realised it is not my preferred way to eat nutella - have been enjoying it on rice cakes recently

  3. What good filling ideas - I love sandwiches, but tend to go for the vegetarian option as I'm pretty sure most places aren't making their fillings using free-range meat/eggs. To date they've all been quite boring...and caterers ALWAYS just offer the same same same thing.

    1. Thanks Miss Piggy - funny how caterers seem to stick to safe stuff and yet the people I know don't seem to like it - is there a huge group of people I never speak to who love it :-)

  4. Your sandwich ideas are inspiring. As I think I've mentioned, I'm not a huge sandwich fan myself, although in part I think that's due to laziness - I find left overs or batches of food made in advance (soup and so on) much easier for work lunches. I do like the idea of many of your combinations, particularly coconut bacon or tofu bacon with salad, and the hummus / quinoa balls, and the mock tuna.

I can say with pleasure that I have been enjoying your carrot rolls the last few days and have loved them both ways I predicted - with vegetable soup and also with vegemite :)

    1. Thanks Kari - I much prefer fresh sandwiches as so much can go wrong in a sandwich that sits in a bag half a day - squishing, soggy, dried out etc. Soup transports so much better. Oh and I enjoy sandwiches so much more when there is good bread about - the carrot rolls make simple taste great - glad you are enjoying them

  5. left over pasta dish makes a wonderful base for a cold sandwich. Any leftovers are great I think even with added salad and cheese if you have it. I love them toasted or fresh.

    1. Thanks Helen - your comment reminded me of tinned spaghetti in a jaffle - that was a real treat when I was young but I rarely have tinned spaghetti these days - you make me want to buy it for old times sake!

  6. Exciting sandwiches are the best! Unfortunately for us vegetarians they are few and far between. Love the inspiration here!

    1. Thanks Kath - the sandwich full of vegies is one I make regularly - mostly I feel like a sandwich is lots of bread but if I load it with vegies I feel so much more healthy

  9. I totally agree about both salads and sandwiches having the potential to go one extreme or the other E.g. Brilliant or boring! Also: sourdough <3

    1. Thanks Nat - yep, and I think a great sourdough can make a boring sandwich great!

  10. Love some of these ideas you have mentioned - the bangers and mash sandwich sounds really good and smoked tofu or tofu bacon is one of my favourite sandwich fillings too. I used to eat sandwiches a lot more than I do these days and probably have them more frequently in the warmer months. I love adding leftovers to sandwiches too!

    1. Thanks Mel - I am the same - spring and summer makes me think fresh salad sandwiches but once it gets cold I want something more warming - I think it is also serendipity depending on what leftovers are about! I eat leftover sausages in sandwiches left as sylvia usually scoffs these now.

  12. I've never been a huge sandwich person, but I've been warming up to them more and more recently. This is going to be my go-to post for ideas! So many great combinations of ingredients, and love the notion of PB in a savory sandwich!

    1. Thanks Ricki - I am enjoying sandwiches with the bread I have been baking (today home made baked beans, avocado, hummus and grated carrot) but also with alternatives to bread such as your toronto sandwich (last week - leftover cauli tikka masala, spinach and tomato) or rice cakes (weekend - peanut butter, avocado and tomato). Highly recommend PB in a savoury sandwich
