After posting a series of street art posts in May, I have continued to photograph street art when possible. I enjoyed doing the series so much that I want to continue it on an occasional basis.
Today I bring you street art from one of Melbourne's most famous street art locations, Hosier Lane. It is a small lane in the block bounded by Russell St, Flinders St, Swanston St and Flinders Lane in the CBD or city of Melbourne.
After taking photos of so much street art recently I was really struck just how touristy this lane seems compared to other street art locations. Where usually I find it pleasing to go off the beaten track and take photos in peace and quiet, Hosier Lane is busy with people wielding cameras. Likewise the walls of Hosier Lane are busy - with artwork. I haven't visited often but from a few infrequent visits I think the art there changes far more regularly than in other locations. I suspect if you go there today, a few months after my visit, much of the artwork you encounter might be different.
One of my favourite places but yes, often quite busy!
ReplyDeleteThanks Veganopoulous - I think I visited during a weekday and was surprised how busy it was
DeleteI love your street art photography posts, such a good bunch of pics. I particularly liked the one that says 'I won't be doing this much longer' - it really made me chuckle. Fingers crossed whoever painted that isn't proved right.
ReplyDeleteThanks joey - I love how the street artists here are not afraid to make their feelings known. There is a lot of fun in the images too. But yes I hope the comment about not doing it much longer is tongue in cheek and that they continue their work!
DeleteThere are some seriously talented street artists where you live! I was in Edinburgh recently and thought of you while I was snapping away at the small pieces of street art I found. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Elizabeth - can't remember seeing much street art around Edinburgh but will have to look out for it on my next visit. Would love to see your pics!
DeleteIt is amazing how quickly Hosier lane changes isn't it?! There used to be a really great place for stencils just out of the cbd - I think it was called Canada Lane. I used to go there in high school to look at all the art, I was right into street art particularly stencilling then. I tried to find it again earlier this year but I think it must have been enveloped by new constructions, or maybe I just missed it. I hope the latter!
ReplyDeleteThanks Caeli - I just googled canada lane and there is one in carlton which is an area I know but have never known it to be a street art site - will have to check it out when I m there next. I really like stencil art so would be interested if there is still art to be seen there.
DeleteThese are all amazing but I especially love the soup tin! It looks like it's coming out of the screen :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Kari - I love the soup tin too - it does look 3D. Clever stuff!
DeleteI like that the Campbell’s label got ripped off & the cool circular portraits on the wall. The “heart” plant is my favorite. I will put that on my list to visit, thank you for sharing them!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rika - Hosier Lane is very central so it is quite easy to visit if you are in Melbourne city (and there are even a few restaurants in that lane (Movida is very well regarded and worth looking up) I love the heart plant too because it is so huge - hope you can get the scale of it in the photo. The circular portraits are of Aboriginal people.
DeleteI love all the street art. The colours are so vibrant. I haven't ever stopped to photograph street art. There's so much talent on these walls xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Charlie - I have had occasional pics of street art in my blog for years but it is only recently I have been making more of an effort to photograph it - but I find that often I pass in the car or public transport and it is hard to find time to stop and photograph. Finding street art when on my bike is much easier
DeleteI haven't been to Hosier Lane for ages - love these photos!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cakelaw - whenever I go there I wish I visited more often
DeleteI must admit I did notice a lot more of this kind of 'street art' in Melbourne than we have in Sydney!
ReplyDeleteVery cool! We don't have anything like this where I live. Not to this extent at least.
