In My Kitchen February 2015

It's February.  We are used it writing 2015.  In fact, 2014 seems a distance memory.  The kids are back at school and the summer has been surprisingly coy.  Let's delve into my kitchen with a guest appearance by our holiday kitchen in Ocean Grove.  First up is the lovely flowers that my mother received for her birthday while we were at the beach.

In my kitchen we have been eating lots of stone fruit.  I took a lot to the beach house at Ocean Grove.  It was a lovely breakfast with some yoghurt and muesli.

In my kitchen we have been drinking Bundaberg sparkling passionfruit drink.  My mum had taken a four pack to Ocean Grove and we loved it so much that I bought a four pack for our own fridge once I got home.

In my kitchen is freshly dried oregano.  The father of Sylvia's friend gave it to me after drying the herbs from his garden.  It really does have so much more flavour than the packaged stuff.

In my kitchen is a pair of Hello Kitty chopsticks.  Sylvia's cousin gave them to her before he headed home to Dublin.  We are missing him and my sister.

In my kitchen we had a decorate your own gingerbread man kit.  The gingerbread was dry and tasteless but decorating it was a fun school holiday activity.

In my kitchen we had haggis-stuffed courgettes on Burns Night.  I had some tomato sauce and stuffed courgettes leftover.  With a sprinkling of cheese they made an unusual but pleasing pizza topping.

In my kitchen is vanilla and peach hand lotion.  I bought it from Mozi in Melbourne Central.  Sylvia and I had a lovely time browsing the homewares and toiletries.  I couldn't resist this hand cream because it smell is so evocative of good times.

In my kitchen we make sushi regularly.  We have used the bear and rabbit moulds a lot for sylvia's lunches last year.  So I am sure the recently purchases car and fish moulds will also be used a lot.  I find it handy to stuff them with sushi and leave them in the fridge overnight.

In my kitchen are purchases from my first trip to Costco.  There are very few reasons for me to go to Costco because we don't have room for bulk purchases.  Yet the lure of cheap maple syrup was too great.  And I couldn't resist some Himalayan pink salt.  That was all I bought!  Great self-control!

In my kitchen are impulse purchases.  While I could resist temptation in Costco, I had no such backbone on a recent trip to the supermarket.  The red velvet Tim Tams are really really good and so is the Whittakers peanut butter chocolate.  The Tim Tams are very sweet and vibrantly coloured.  The peanut butter filling in the chocolate was surprisingly savoury and very good.  Sylvia chose the Frozen tub with biscuits in the shapes of Frozen characters.  The biscuits are yet to be eaten and I expect them to be ordinary.  And stay tuned for how I used the caramel Tim Tams.

I am sending this post to Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial for her In My Kitchen event.  Head over to join in (by 10th of each month) and/or check out what is happening in other bloggers' kitchens.

  1. Oh so many great things! I really wish that peanut butter chocolate was vegan. It catches my eye every time I'm in the supermarket! My Sylvia would love those sushi moulds as well as the frozen container. And just last week my mum bought me that maple syrup from Costco! It feels so indulgent to have such a large bottle of it

  3. This just made me smile. How lucky for you to have a Costco nearby, though I have to admit I would find it difficult to exercise the same restraint that you showed. As for that peanut butter chocolate - soooo insanely good - no restraint around that even vaguely possible.

    1. Thanks Sue - the Costco is not that close and I don't have a membership so I don't see myself going there often but I think I was too overwhelmed to buy a lot - just as well! I'd prefer to leave my moments of weakness for the peanut butter chocolate :-)

  4. The Whittakers peanut butter chocolate was one of a relatively small set of foods that could sway me into eating dairy :-) It might be for the best we don't have it here, but it was / is delicious! I love your sushi moulds too and ditto the hand cream - as well as the fresh peaches, which I can almost conjure up a taste of. Fresh dried oregano sounds fantastic too.

    1. Thanks Kari - I have been tempted by the peanut butte chocolate bar often but reluctant to have sweet food with peanut butter in the house due to Sylvia's allergy but decided to treat ourselves at night when she is in bed - it was dangerously moreish

  5. I always like have a nosy of your IMK. D nags me to make veggie sushi, as its been years, but one of the reasons I hesitate is that I want these moulds, I can never find sushi moulds here in the U.K, I may have to order them on-line. So the point is I am so envious of your little collection. I used ot pick up that maple syrup when i was on my culinary cafe adventure, but these days just smaller jars. And the haggis stuffed courgettes look good.

    1. Thanks Shaheen - we often make sushi without the moulds but they are fun to use and useful for storing it in the fridge. Would love to share some haggis dishes with you.

    1. Thanks Lizzy - my mum had a lovely garden and often has flowers from it about the house so we thought it would be nice for her to have some flowers in the holiday house

  8. Your kitchen is always so fun! I miss stone fruit, but summer will be here before I know it, I'm sure.
Fresh dried herbs are the best! That was so nice of Sylvia's friend's dad to share some with you =)
Love the chopsticks and molds as well, too cute!

    1. Thanks Kimmy - the stone fruit we have been buying lately hasn't been so brilliant so I agree that the seasons pass quickly.

  10. It's a shame the gingerbread men didn't taste good because they're very cute and I love the decorations. Your mother's birthday flowers are beautiful. We've been enjoying the stone-fruit too. I love the look of that pizza xx

    1. Thanks charlie - I felt a bit bad giving the gingerbread men to sylvia and a friend but they did seem to like them - and I have a gingerbread house kit I can't bear to put together as I wonder what it would taste like

  11. I'm kind of glad I don't live closer to a Costco. I don't think I'd have your self control.

My kitchen is awash with stone fruit as well. I'll be sad when the season ends.

    1. Thanks Milk and Honey - I actually didn't know there was a costco at Docklands - it was easy to show self control when I had to carry it home and the kids were waiting for us - I actually seemed the odd one out because everyone else had huge trolleys and cars - we were travelling on public transport!

  12. Hahaha, I had to do a double take since that is exactly what our maple syrup looks like here in Canada (if we buy it at Costco)!!! And oddly enough, I saw very similar chopsticks this weekend. ;) Love it!

  14. Cute little moulds but best of all is that heap of stone fruit. Mind you, TimTams come a close run second. My son returned home briefly from NZ with no clothes but a bag stuffed full of TimTams, which we ate far too quickly. His return bag included Marmite and Percy Pigs. Still no clothes.

    1. Thanks Anne - Tim Tams never hang around the house too long - had to look up percy pigs - they are so cute! I guess he thought that you would be constantly washing his clothes for him. When we have been to Scotland, E always had to stock up on Marks and Spencers clothes

  15. I probably would have been tempted by maple syrup and Himalayan Pink Salt too! I have loads of oregano at the moment and you have inspired me to pick it and dry some before the grasshoppers figure out it tastes good!! Thank you.

    1. Thanks Ardys - good luck with battling the grasshoppers for the oregano

  17. I only bought a few things on my only visit to Costco. Once was the parmesan that Celia had in her post and another was the maple syrup from yours. It was a bargain to be sure. Cute sushi moulds - I'll have to go to Daiso or Danda and grab a couple. Tasty tour... Fiona xx

    1. Thanks Fiona - I think Daiso is as hard to resist as Costco (not familiar with Danda) - though strangely enough I don't think they had the cute moulds when I was there and I bought the moulds at Woolworths. We used to have a great Japanese store at Northland shopping centre but it closed.

  18. We have a new Costco in Adelaide, but I have yet to brave it. I fear I will have little strength to resist temptation there.

  19. Johanna, you win the prize for the person who has spent the least amount of money at Costco ever! :) We buy their maple syrup too! I love the little sushi moulds and the Little Kitty chopsticks, and what a nice gift to give someone - home dried herbs! Our oregano is smothering most of the other herbs in the garden, so I should really try doing that! :)

  20. Wowza, so many lovely and cute things in the kitchen! These sushi moulds are sooooooo adorable….I love the bunny mold! I always pick passionfruit flavor when it comes to juices or drinks in Melbourne - it’s so tasty! I actually live next to Costco, haha, but rarely shop there!

  21. Oooh, what cute sushi molds. I have a single rice cube mold, so boring compared to the cute fish, etc. At our local Costco the maple syrup is a great buy, along with their cheese collection and fresh bouquets.

  22. lots of lovely things in your kitchen this month. i am envious of the maple syrup. i love it and it is always so expensive. chopsticks are very cute.

  23. Johanna, I would love to know the story behind your Peach & Vanilla scented hand cream. (You alluded to good times.) Isn't it funny how a scent can transport your memories to "now?" A friend recently gave me some lavender and "stress relief" essential oils (whatever's in the latter!) and, curious soul, I mixed them and immediately recalled the 'homemade soap smell' in my Grandma's basement 45 years ago! (Amazing...) Thanks for this aromatic peek in your kitchen... and beach-side bouquet. All lovely!
