That's a shame about your grandmother's traditions - maybe I will see some of her traditions on your blog sometime

thanks Susan - am pleased to finally participate in BBD and enjoyed your information about origins of hot cross buns on your blog

thanks Pixie - glad you are feeling tempted to make them - they really aren't so hard as long as you have some time (and some elbow muscle if you don't have a dough hook or bread machine)

thanks Ann - it takes some time to appreciate the wisdom of parents but I do love hot cross buns all the more for only having them at easter

thanks Holler - yes I am lucky to have a mum who bakes with yeast - makes it seem far more possible - I used to feel it was odd in Scotland that we had to work on Good Friday but my workplace gives us Fri, Mon and Tues off so that makes me happy - enjoy the egg rolling - it sounds fun - hope you get some sun :-)Johanna GGGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08594201473931487490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742756814967464811.post-78415669783896037822008-03-23T06:31:00.000+11:002008-03-23T06:31:00.000+11:00I really enjoyed your post! I made my first batch at home last year and thoroughly enjoyed them. I haven't made them this year and the sweet doughy ones at the supermarket don't measure up in comparison!

Yours look like just the kind I prefer. It's great that you did so much bread baking with your mum, growing up. My mum was a bit yeast-phobic and sadly my grandmother's German yeast-baking seems to have died with her.Cindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07147906610629741961noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742756814967464811.post-63819769119264763202008-03-22T08:14:00.000+11:002008-03-22T08:14:00.000+11:00I love your writing. Hot Cross Buns aren't part of my family tradition, but D and I are in the midst of the somewhat exciting, somewhat petrifying stage of combining our heritages to create a new set of family traditions that we can share. With Purim and Good Friday falling on the same day this year, I baked the Jewish Hamantaschen before running off to Good Friday services, which were long enough to make me feel a little bit like the way you described the streets where you live. Thank you for your post, and enjoy those nice chewy homemade buns, and all the rich family memories that go with it.Neenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10669218258335429493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6742756814967464811.post-40062245691442810022008-03-22T02:49:00.000+11:002008-03-22T02:49:00.000+11:00These are gorgeous!
