Two of my good friends just moved apartments within the past month, so I definitely got a work out. Sorry the gooseberry fool didn't work out - when I do it I put the gooseberries in a pan with a tiny bit of water to stop them catching and then stew until soft and pulpy. You can add sugar to taste, but I prefer it without. I generally add either 1/2 pint (284ml) softly whipped cream to the cooled gooseberries or use about 300g yogurt - thick greek yogurt is delicious.
